Letter to Class of 2020 and Parents

Dear Class of 2020 and parents/guardians,

Covid-19 abruptly interrupted your senior year on March 16, leaving many of you worried about missing out on our Blue Devil senior traditions.  I want to assure the Class of 2020 that your efforts for the past thirteen years will not go unnoticed or uncelebrated!  When Governor Kemp announced that schools would be closed for the remainder of the school year, I, along with the other administrators and several faculty members, went to work planning alternate celebrations and recognitions for the Class of 2020.  While some events had to be cancelled and these alternate celebrations may differ from our traditional ones due to safety concerns, I hope that you will feel honored and cherished as members of the Class of 2020 at Tift County High School.  Plans for these celebrations are described in this letter.

We are preparing a virtual joint Honors Night and Pathway Ceremony to share with students and parents online.  During the virtual Honors Night Ceremony, we will also recognize all senior CTAE, Fine Arts, Foreign Language and Advanced Academic Content Pathway Completers.  We will post the Honors Night Ceremony to the school website on May 5 at 6:00 PM.  You and your family can view the Honors Night/Pathway Ceremony at any time.    Seniors will receive their honor plaques, certificates, honor stoles, and pathway cords.  We are considering a drive-through pickup of awards and cords for seniors prior to May 23.  More information about the date, time, and plan for seniors to pick-up their awards and pathway cords will be sent via email at a later date.

Graduation, by far, is the most important event occurring during your thirteen years of school.  Graduation occurs when you earn all credits and finish all tests needed to meet the requirements for graduation. Many students confuse graduation with the graduation ceremony.  Despite the Covid-19 shutdown, you will be a graduate of Tift County High School on May 23 if you meet all requirements for graduation whether or not you walk Brodie Field.  Please continue working to complete all credits needed! The work that you are doing in your courses this semester is very important as it will affect your graduation status, honor student status, and grade point average.  Your teachers, counselors, and administrators are all here to support you as you finish your requirements for graduation.  If you need assistance with your coursework, please email your teachers immediately.  If you need other assistance, email your counselor or administrator.

Tift County High School will have a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2020 when conditions allow for us to do so safely.  We do not know for certain when this ceremony will occur as we will follow the recommendations of government and health officials regarding congregating in groups and social distancing.  I and the entire administration team do not want May 23 to pass without recognizing the hard work and dedication of the Class of 2020.  Therefore, On May 23 at 9:00 A.M., Tift County High School will hold an online celebration for the Class of 2020.  This online celebration will be posted on the school system website (www.Tiftschools.com) for all to view.  We are doing our best to make this celebration as much like the traditional graduation ceremony as possible.  More information regarding the celebration and graduation ceremony will be sent to you via email at a later date.  One thing is for certain, no one will ever forget the year that you graduated!  The Class of 2020 has definitely made history.

There are also several other tasks that we must complete prior to graduation.  Please read the information about each task listed below.  In some cases, exact dates and times may not have been established for these tasks due to uncertainty about when the Stay-in-Place Order and social-distancing requirements will be lifted.  I will send specific information about these tasks via email at a later date.  Please check your school email each day!  As we complete these tasks, we will all follow the recommendations of government and health officials regarding our response to Covid-19.  The safety of all of our Blue Devils is most important.
