The students in Ms. Chloe Adcock's American Literature class worked in  groups to create T-Charts that compared the two different ideas presented in the poem, "The New Colossus." The students paid attention to the diction of the poem and placed words according to which category suited them best: hope or despair. By  the end of the activity, students were able to see that the author's perspective and attitude in reference to the American Dream(which is the theme of our first unit in American Literature) was that America offers hope to the hopeless and welcomes all to join in on our visions of freedom. Students then illustrated their ideas on their desk.
